Drinking Water for Effective Weight Loss

Posted on November 5th, 2010 by admin  |  2 Comments »

A new study has found that obese dieters who drank two cups of water before each meal lost five pounds more after three months. They also kept more weight off after a year.

The study may be the first hard evidence on increased water intake as a viable weight-loss technique.

Discovery News reports:

“The reason could be physical. According to some research, water consumption might spark the body to produce more heat, boosting metabolism and burning more calories. Or, drinking more water might simply make people less likely to drink a lot of high-calorie sugar-filled beverages.”

The study included only middle-aged and older adults. However, other studies suggest that drinking water might help dieters of all ages.

Will Pure Water Help You Shed the Extra Pounds?

Natural health expert Dr. Joseph Mercola considers drinking water a “solid strategy” you can do before meals. “If you don’t drink enough, you can easily become dehydrated. As you may have experienced, dehydration often mimics hunger,” he says.

Water may work by physically filling you up, boosting your metabolism, or by simply taking the place of sugar-laden drinks like soda and juices.

Dr. Fereydoon Batmanghelidj, author of the book, Your Body’s Many Cries for Water, adds that the importance of water goes beyond weight loss. Chronic dehydration has been linked to a number of health conditions, including chronic fatigue syndrome, depression, hypertension, multiple sclerosis, and asthma.

Say “No” to Fructose and Sugary Drinks!

Dr. Mercola reiterates his stand against soda, fruit juice, sports drinks, and high-calorie beverages–many of which contain fructose.

He considers the excessive intake of high fructose corn syrup–a main ingredient in soda–as well as countless processed and pre-packaged foods as the primary culprit in obesity.

“Even seemingly ‘health-conscious’ beverages like Vitamin Water, Jamba Juice, and Odwalla SuperFood contain far more added sugar and/or fructose than many desserts,” Dr. Mercola reveals.

He adds that aside from packing on extra pounds faster than other ingredients, fructose also promotes adipose fat, a particularly dangerous kind of body fat. Adipose fat collects in your abdominal region and is associated with a greater risk of heart disease.

Purify your Drinking Water

How much water should you drink?

Dr. Mercola offers a simple trick to gauge the sufficiency of your water intake. You’re drinking enough clean, pure water when your urine takes on a light yellow color. Dark yellow urine signals the need for you to drink more water.

Drink more water if you’re engaged in exercise or other vigorous activities.

Remember, though, that you should first ensure the safety of your drinking water. A high-quality water filtration system can remove the impurities and toxic contaminants that may be present in your tap water.

Quality water filters also effectively help remove fluoride–a poison that presents serious health problems.

Dr. Mercola personally recommends reverse osmosis filters as the best way to filter your water.  However, if you use a reverse osmosis filter, be sure to add Himalayan salt or another high-quality salt to the water after filtration.
