Drinking Tap Water in Schools, Not an Option for Your Kids

Children Drinking In School Tap WaterLetting your children drink tap water in schools may not be a good idea right now. Why? A recent nationwide investigation in 27 states has shown that tap water in schools is contaminated with lead and other poisonous substances from old pipes, based on a report by National Geographic.

Lead, a highly toxic chemical found in the earth’s crust, comes out of the drinking fountains at many US schools and puts your children’s health at risk.

Health Hazards of Lead Contamination in Tap Water

Natural health experts like Dr. Joseph Mercola say that chronic intake of high levels of lead may cause your child to suffer from these conditions:

  • Neurological impairment
  • Decreased intelligence
  • Permanent brain damage

But even lower lead levels may bring about damaging effects to your kid’s health. In fact, the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) web site highlights that these had been linked with “measurable changes in children’s mental development and behavior,” such as:

  • Hyperactivity
  • Lack of muscular coordination
  • Deficits in fine motor function
  • Poor hand-eye coordination
  • Reduced reaction time
  • Weak performance in intelligence tests

In adults, chronic lead exposure is associated with higher blood pressure, decreased fertility, cataracts, nerve disorders, muscle and joint pain and memory or concentration problems.

A Safe and Clean Water Source for Your Kids

With the serious health risks that may arise from drinking contaminated tap water, Dr. Mercola recommends “teaching your child to avoid the drinking fountain at school” because there is no way of telling what kinds of toxins are in the water.

He also adds that the “best alternative to having pure water that is also safe for the environment is to use a high-quality water filter for your home.”

Water filtration systems can purify your tap water, which you can put in a safe, chemical-free bottle that your kid can bring to school and drink at any time.
