Fluoride and Other Health Myths Exposed
The “overwhelming amount of health information by the media” makes it difficult to separate the truth from lies. Dr. Joseph Mercola says that there’s no shortage of health myths that can impact the lives of millions, including the following:
1. Fluoride in your water lowers your risk of cavities. Fluoride is added to municipal water supplies to help decrease the incidence of dental caries among children. But the health dangers outweigh the benefits – if fluoride even does its job at all, says Dr. Mercola.
Statistics show that water fluoridation is ineffective in preventing dental caries. “There is practically no difference in tooth decay between fluoridated and non-fluoridated countries, and no difference between states that have a high- or low percentage of their water fluoridated,” explains Dr. Mercola. Meanwhile, fluoride has been shown to cause significant health problems.
Dr. Mercola has partnered with the Fluoride Action Network to help end water fluoridation poisoning in the United States and Canada.
2. Cardio is one of the best types of exercise. Dr. Mercola reveals the problem with conventional cardio: it only works on the slow twitch muscle fibers in your red muscles, completely ignoring your white muscle super-fast twitch fibers. He prefers interval cardio exercises, such as Peak 8 exercises, to better burn fat and achieve optimal health.
3. GMO crops are safe, well-tested, and economically beneficial. Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are part of the “greatest health disasters in the American diet.” Within nine years of their introduction in 1996, multiple chronic diseases jumped from 7 to 13 percent of the population and many other diseases have exponentially increased.
More than the health setbacks they bring, GMOs also pose significant environmental threats.
4. Milk does your body good. Only if it’s RAW, says Dr. Mercola. While many insist that it has supreme health benefits, conventional pasteurized milk contains harmful growth hormones and antibiotics. Pasteurization also destroys good bacteria and important enzymes like lactase.
Probiotics can supply you with the beneficial bacteria your body needs to thrive.* If you plan to supplement, choose a potent formula with billions of good bacteria and other health-promoting features.*
5. All plant-based supplements are as good as animal-based supplements. Omega-3 fats are a good example. There are three types of omega-3s: docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and alpha-linoleic acid (ALA). Many of the known health benefits associated with omega-3 are linked to the animal-based EPA and DHA, not the plant-based ALA.
Found in flaxseed and nuts, ALA is converted into EPA and DHA in your body only at a very low ratio.
