The Dangers of Fluoridated Water for Your Baby

baby milk formulaIf your child is less than a year old, be selective about the water you give him or her as it may contain harmful levels of fluoride. In 2007, the American Dental Association (ADA) warned not to mix tap water with baby formula because it may endanger the health of your child.

Health Risks of Too Much Fluoride in Your Tap Water

The ADA gave out this warning because exposure to significant levels of fluoride can lead to fluorosis, a condition that discolors the teeth and damages tooth enamel. Studies have linked fluorosis with an increased risk of significant health conditions, such as:

  • Endocrine system disorders
  • Skeletal damage
  • Lower IQ
  • Osteoporosis
  • Brain damage

How to Protect Your Baby from Contaminated Drinking Water

Natural health expert, Dr. Joseph Mercola, believes that breast milk remains the most complete food for babies. Breast milk contains docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which supports a baby’s brain development, and many other beneficial substances which cannot be replaced by any type of baby formula.

However, there are some cases when breast milk is not an option. Babies who are adopted and those who are born to mothers with serious health problems need to be given a nutritious alternative to breast milk.

If you opt to use a baby formula, mix it with only pure, filtered spring water to prevent the side effects of fluoridated water. Additionally, he cautions not to use tap water because it often contains fluoride and other harmful chemicals such as chlorine.

“Right now, the best way you can provide pure, fluoride-free water to your family is by using a high quality water filter, that you can install in your home,” notes Dr. Mercola.

The water filter should be able to efficiently remove fluoride, chlorine, inorganic and organic contaminants from your water. It should also have a bacteriostatic environment that prevents bacteria from thriving inside the water filter.
