What’s in Vitaminwater? Fructose….

Posted on August 13th, 2010 by admin  |  No Comments »

Forget plain drinking water. This is the covert message behind Glaceau Vitaminwater. Owned by Coca-Cola, it offers product variants called Revive, Focus, and Connect.

With added vitamins and electrolytes as its main selling point, Vitaminwater sold 142 million cases in the United States in 2009. But what do you really get when you drink this product?

Natural health expert Dr. Joseph Mercola reveals that fructose, the number one source of calories in the US and the “primary cause of the obesity epidemic,” is being used to sell Vitaminwater.

“When you drink Vitaminwater, what you really get is 33 grams – more than six teaspoons – of sugar, including crystalline fructose,” he says.

Crystalline fructose is a new variety of fructose that may be worse for your health than high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS). It may even contain arsenic, lead, chloride, and heavy metals.

Widely mistaken as an acceptable form of sweetener, fructose is actually far from healthy.

Refined man-made fructose metabolizes to triglycerides and adipose tissue, not blood glucose. The major downside here is that fructose neither stimulates insulin secretion nor enhances leptin production.

“Together, insulin and leptin act as key signals in regulating how much food you eat, and several studies have linked dietary fructose to increased food intake and weight gain,” adds Dr. Mercola.

Fructose is implicated in significantly higher triglyceride levels, putting you at an increased risk of heart disease.

According to Dr. Mercola, it is important to always be critical of what you drink. Vitaminwater is marketed as a trendy new functional beverage. It has been endorsed by popular celebrity spokespeople like Ellen DeGeneres.

Dr. Mercola recommends skipping soda and sweetened drinks to greatly improve your health. Remember, though, that sticking to drinking pure water requires staying wary of impurities and contaminants that may be present in most municipal water supplies.

Quality water filters purify water from your tap and effectively help remove fluoride, a poison presenting a different set of serious health problems.

Dr. Mercola personally recommends reverse osmosis filters as the best way to filter your water.  However, if you use a reverse osmosis filter, be sure to add Himalayan salt or other high-quality salt to the water after filtration.
