Evils of Bottled Water Industry Tapped by New Film
The cost of water has surpassed the cost of gas, so it’s becoming evident that drinking water is the next Empire. This and other shocking revelations about the bottled water industry – along with its effects on health, climate change, pollution, and reliance on oil – are revealed in Tapped: The Movie by Stephanie Soechtig.
The film begins with this unsettling statement: “By 2030, two-thirds of the world will be lacking access to clean drinking water.” Among the factors that come into play here is the corporate control of drinking water – the World Bank has estimated the value of the world water market at 800 billion dollars per year.
Bottled Water Can Cost You As Much as 1,900 Times More!
Soechtig’s film also includes a segment that highlights the water supply crisis that many communities now face. In 2007, Raleigh, North Carolina faced a terrible drought, yet the Pepsi plant in the area proceeded with its bottled water plant operations even during that critical time. Pepsi used an estimated 400,000 gallons of municipal water daily, bottling and selling them back to the community that was running out of water.
But this isn’t all you need to know about bottled water. Dr. Joseph Mercola asserts that many bottled water products are simply bottled tap water. They may or may not have received additional treatment.
“Pepsi’s Aquafina and Coca-Cola Co.’s Dasani bottled waters are both made using purified water from public reservoirs. The major difference is the price. You pay 1,900 times as much for this water, simply because it’s now in a plastic bottle,” reveals Dr. Mercola.
Low Purity Standards, High Health Hazards
The bigger problem is that most municipal tap water must actually adhere to stricter purity standards than bottled water. An independent test by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) revealed 38 low-level contaminants in bottled water (link), with each of the 10 tested brand containing an average of eight chemicals, including:
- Disinfection byproducts (DBPs)
- Caffeine and Tylenol
- Nitrate
- Industrial chemicals
- Arsenic and bacteria
Plastic bottles also contain chemicals like bisphenol A (BPA) and phthalates, which mimic hormones in your body. “These chemicals can leach out and contaminate the water under the best of conditions, but tends to increase anytime the bottle has been exposed to heat and reused,” says Dr. Mercola.
Even tiny concentrations of these chemicals can potentially cause:
- Structural damage to your brain
- Increased fat formation and obesity risk
- Altered immune function
- Hyperactivity, increased aggressiveness, and impaired learning
- Early puberty
- Changes in gender-specific behavior
- Stimulation of prostate cancer cells
- Increased prostate size and decreased sperm production
Plastic trash is a major environmental threat as well. According to the Sierra Club, the U.S. alone uses 1.5 million barrels of oil to make plastic water bottles, the majority of which then end up in landfills. (Link)
Fortunately, you can use a quality water filtration system to ditch bottled water and ensure water quality right in your own home. This is far less expensive for your chronic water use, and water filters can help take out a barrage of contaminants in most municipal water supplies today.
